St. Basilide’s Vocational Technical Institute was founded by the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception (FIC) under the sponsorship of the Catholic Diocese of Wa. The Institute was officially opened on 5th February 1973 by Bro. Jos Van Dinther. The idea of a technical training institute of this nature came from Brothers John van Winden, Henry schurs (Borgias) and Jos Van dinther in their concern for the growth and development of people.
At the time brothers were building Nandom senior High School, they faced the difficulty of recruiting trained and/or competent craftsmen, which compelled them to recruit skilled labour from the southern part of Ghana for employment. This experience brought about the need to build and develop the potentials of the youth through skills training in the Northern sector, Wa to be précised.
When the idea was mooted in 1972 no formal vocational or technical school existed in the Upper West Region which was then Upper Region. The nearest vocational and technical education and training was in Bawku and Tamale about 381km and 386km away respectively.
The realization of a non-existent skilled labour was obvious, which necessitated the establishment of a practical oriented vocational training centre in Kaleo for the transformation of the area and its development.
The Institute has expanded in its infrastructural and institutional process of development. These changes have been necessitated by the unprecedented interest of teeming JHS leavers to develop their potential in capacity building related to competency-based occupational skills.
In 1st September 2010, the school was absorbed into the public institutions and to be supported by government GES (Ghana Education Service). This whole idea of absorption of St Basilide’s Technical Institute into the public system was a way to partner with government in training the students
One dire need at the time was the untrained Middle School Leavers who were not having any technical education and therefore cannot meet the requirements of the job market. This resulted in their migration to the southern part of Ghana in search of jobs in the gold mines and the cocoa plantations.
The institute currently has six very attractive courses which include the following:
