About Lamashegu Technical Iinstitute
Lamashegu Technical Institute (LAMTECH) is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution located in the Lamashegu Industrial Area of Tamale, Ghana. Established in 1974, the Institute provides quality technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial training, equipping learners with employable skills for self-reliance, industry, and national development.
Lamashegu Technical Institute (LAMTECH), formerly known as Tamale Vocational Training Institute (TVTI), was established in 1974 by the then Northern Regional Coordinating Council (Administration) and placed under the supervision of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) under the Ministry responsible for employment and Labour.
The establishment of the Institute formed part of the Government of Ghana’s efforts to expand access to technical and vocational education and equip young people with practical skills for gainful employment and self-reliance. The Institute was founded with the primary objective of providing employable and industry-relevant skills to the youth of the Northern Region and beyond.
From its inception, the institution has played a vital role in human resource development by training skilled artisans, technicians, and entrepreneurs capable of contributing meaningfully to national development. Through its commitment to quality technical and vocational education, the Institute has empowered thousands of graduates with the competencies needed to enter the job market, establish their own businesses, and support economic growth within their communities.
LAMTECH is strategically located in the Lamashegu Industrial Area of Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region of Ghana. The Institute's location places it at the heart of an important industrial and development corridor, providing students with opportunities for practical exposure and collaboration with key institutions.
It is situated near the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) and the GRATIS Foundation, organizations that have contributed significantly to industrial and technological advancement in the region. Over the years, the Institute has expanded its programmes and infrastructure to respond to changing labour market demands and advancements in technology. It continues to embrace innovation, competency-based training, and industry partnerships to ensure that graduates possess the knowledge, technical expertise, and entrepreneurial mindset required in today's competitive world.
In 2021, as part of the Government of Ghana's reforms to strengthen and harmonize the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, the institution was officially renamed from Tamale Vocational Training Institute (TVTI) to Lamashegu Technical Institute (LAMTECH). The change reflected a renewed vision and commitment to excellence in technical education and skills development. Today, LAMTECH stands as a reputable TVET institution in Northern Ghana, dedicated to producing competent, innovative, and industry-ready graduates. The Institute remains steadfast in its mission of empowering individuals through skills training, fostering entrepreneurship, and contributing to sustainable national development through quality technical and vocational education.
