About Abiriw Presbyterian Technical Institute

ABIRIW PRESBYTERIAN TECHNICAL INSTITUTE is a Faith-based and an agency of Ghana TVET Service under the Ministry of Education with the support from the Presbyterian church of Ghana. The School has been providing employable skills training to the youth and adults in Abiriw and its surrounding communities and Ghana as a whole since 2003. Across Abiriw and surrounding communities, ABIRIW PRESBY has graduated hundreds of trainees who have successfully entered the workforce in their respective communities, easing the burden of unemployment as well as the rural-urban drift that has challenged the country. The school is located at Abiriw-Akuapem in the Okere District, Eastern Region. The School currently run four Programs i.e. Electrical Engineering Technology, Fashion Design Technology, Hair Technology and Catering and Hospitality Management.

Initially dubbed “Presby Women Teens Centre” the school was started by the Women Fellowship of the Calvary Presbyterian Church, Abiriw in 1990 as a skills acquisition (apprenticeship) Centre for teenage mothers in palm kernel-oil production and soap making, aimed at curtailing teenage pregnancy that had bedevilled the community, causing lots of girls dropping out of school to nurse their babies. Members of the Presby Women Fellowship led by Mrs. Susana Siaw and Mrs Yeboah Dankwa lobbied the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) who had been operating in Akuapem since 1983, to provide support. This partnership brought relief as the PPAG provided clinical services (i.e. family planning services, counselling (sex education), antenatal care, mother and child welfare and sponsorship). This led to an increased enrolment of teenage mothers and single mothers at the Centre. To accommodate this growth, in 1993, the PPAG renovated an old building (now serving as male hostel) and a shed (now used as the General office cum District Minister’s office) into office and training Centre, to house a branch office and changed the name of the Centre to Teenage Rehabilitation Centre, focused on Family Life Education, Catering, Dressmaking, as well as Batik and “tie-and-dye” for teen school dropouts and young unmarried mothers. The pioneer class had twenty-five (25) young mothers enrolled to undertake a three (3) year programme in vocational skills such as sewing, bread baking and handicraft.

Although only five (5) young mothers were able to go through the three year training successfully, JICA and Ghana International Bank (GHIB) took interest in the project and provided grants to complete the first phase of the classroom block building and the current female hostel of the school respectively. This was in the year 1999 and 2003 respectively. In 2010, Mr. Kofi Otutu Adu Labi through one Helen Shipton, a Scottish solicitor, again secured another funds to complete the first floor.

As the enrolment soared, PPAG handed over the vocational aspect to the Government by going into collaboration with the Integrated Community Centres for Employable Skills (ICCES), an agency of Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations in the year 2003.

ICCES and PPAG jointly administered the Centre from 2003 to 2007 when PPAG winded up their Reproductive Health project in the District and handed over the school to the Akuapem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
Thus, the school’s name evolved from Presbyterian Women Centre, to PPAG Teens Centre, Presby Resource Centre, Presby Vocational Technical Institute, Presbyterian ICCES Vocational & Technical Institute and presently, Abiriw Presbyterian Technical Institute.

The Pre-tertiary Education Act 1049 of 2020 has merged about 255 public TVET Institutions under different Ministries to Ministry of Education.
The Merged TVET institutions have TVET Service to manage, oversee and ensure the implementation of approved national policies and program relating to pre-tertiary technical and vocational education and training.
The school, since 2022, has now changed policy management from Integrated Community Centres for Employable skills (ICCES) under the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relation to TVET service under the Ministry of Education. The school currently is part of the Free SHS/TVET policy and receives full support from the Ghana TVET Service and Ministry of Education.
