About Somanya Technical Institute

The social welfare vocational training and rehabilitation institute was originally a rehabilitation centre established in 1972 to cater for the vocational needs of persons with disabilities to ensure that they are self-reliant, self-sufficient and have a decent livelihood. This has been in existence for more than four decades and the Centre has turned out many persons with disabilities who are now living satisfactory and independent lives. In 2010, the vocational training institute and rehabilitation centre was started to provide for holistic vocational training and entrepreneurship skill to both PWD and abled bodied as part of the new social integration policy of government. In 2021, the name of the Centre change to Somanya Technical Institute (STI) as a result of Government educational reform agenda to re-align all technical and vocational institutions under Ghana TVET Service.

SOMANYA TECHNICAL INSTITUTE (STI)

BACKGROUND OF INSTITUTE
The social welfare vocational training and rehabilitation institute was originally a rehabilitation centre established in 1972 to cater for the vocational needs of persons with disabilities to ensure that they are self-reliant, self-sufficient and have a decent livelihood.
This has been in existence for the past forty-two (42) years and the Centre has turned out many persons with disabilities who are now living satisfactory and independent lives.
In 2010, the voc ational training institute and rehabilitation centre was started to provide for holistic vocational training and entrepreneurship skill to both PWD and abled bodied as part of the new social integration policy of government.
In 2022, the name of the Centre change to Somanya Technical Institute (STI) as a result of Government education reform agenda to re-align all technical and vocational institutions under Ghana TVET Service.

STAFF STRENGTH
The Institute has staff population of forty-three made up of fifteen non-teaching staff and twenty-eight teaching staff members.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The institute started with the following infrastructure
Assembly Hall
3 unit classroom with ancillary toilet facilities and administration
2 unit workshop for Fashion and Beauty Therapy
Lab and offices block
2 unit block for Building Construction
2 dormitory for both boys and girls
Five (5) bungalow block for staff members
School gate

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
Somanya Technical Institute emphasizes on practical training that develops the head (Cognitive knowledge) - the heart (morality/affective) and the hands (psychomotor skills). Practical activities form the core of skills development



EDUCATIONAL TRAINING
Technical and Vocational training is both Practical and theoretical oriented. Students are always taken through vigorous theoretical lessons and some practical work. The practical training form about 70% of the training whiles theoretical work only form 30%. It is the practical activities that will bring out the skill in the trainee. The practical is the best training that touches the head -knowledge or cognitive, the heart – affective or morality and the hands - psychomotor skills


DISCIPLINE
The Institute has 7-member disciplinary committee chaired by Mr. William Boakye, our Social studies tutor. The Committee members are well trained to handle both minor and major cases of students.

HEALTH CARE
Health Care is utmost priority in the Institute. The Institute is having Memorandum of Understand with Somanya polyclinic to take good care of our students when they report sick at the polyclinic.

SCHOOL BUS
Somanya Technical Institute has a thirty-three (33) seater bus with registration number GV 222-24.

2025 Examination Results
!n 2025, the Institute Presented One Hundred and eighty-six (6) candidates. Out of this number the institute had overall score of 97%.

INSTITUTIONAL LINKAGES
Ongoing Government Project
As part of Government efforts to transform technical and vocational education in Ghana in providing access, quality and relevance in the TVET sector of Ghana, Government through the GETFUND, is providing three (3) projects to the Institute. The projects include:

Three storey Girls Dormitory
18- Unit classroom Block

CHALLENGES
Inadequate staffing for both instructional and administrative staff.
Inadequate storage facilities to keep food supplies received from buffer stock
Lack of practical material for effective training
Construction of fence wall

CONCLUSION
Despite the inadequacy of technical and Vocational facilities in the Institute, Somanya Technical Institute continue to produce skilled graduates who excel in their various careers.
