About St. Daniel Comboni Technical Institute, Liati
St. Daniel Comboni Technical Institute, established in 1981 by the Comboni Missionaries, is a leading TVET institution in Ghana. It offers diverse technical programs, training over 800 students. With a strong reputation for skills development, the institute faces growing infrastructure needs due to increased enrollment and demand for technical education.
St. Daniel Comboni Technical Institute is a reputable Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution established on 23rd September 1981 by the Comboni Missionaries, a Catholic congregation founded by St. Daniel Comboni. Located on a vast land area of approximately 20.62 acres, the institute has grown steadily over the years to become a center of excellence for technical skills development in the Volta Region and Ghana at large.
The institute began its journey as a trade school, officially opening its doors on 22nd October 1981 with an initial intake of fifty (50) students drawn mainly from the Liati community and surrounding areas such as Have, Nyagbo, Wudome, Gbledi, and Logba. Notable among the pioneering students were Ing. Francis Dotse and Ing. Eric Adoboe. At its inception, the school was managed by Rev. Fr. Eugenio Petrogalli, with Mr. Festus Tornyesinu serving as the first Principal. The academic work was supported by a dedicated team of eight (8) skilled teachers who delivered training in five core trade areas: Bakery, Fashion Designing, Carving, Carpentry and Joinery, and Blacksmithing.
Over the decades, the institute has undergone significant transformation, evolving from a basic trade school into a fully-fledged technical institute. Today, it offers nine (9) diverse and industry-relevant programs, including Electrical Engineering Technology, Automotive Engineering Technology, Building Construction Technology, Wood Construction Technology, Catering and Hospitality Technology, Fashion Design Technology, Architectural Draftsmanship, Agricultural Mechanization Technology, and Welding and Fabrication Technology. These programs are designed to equip students with practical skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship competencies to meet the demands of the modern job market.
The introduction of the Free TVET policy and increased national interest in technical education have significantly boosted student enrollment, growing from 120 students in 2016 to over 800 currently. While this growth reflects the institute’s strong reputation and impact, it has also placed considerable pressure on existing infrastructure and resources. Despite its long history of over four decades, the institute has seen limited infrastructural development, creating challenges in accommodating the growing student population.
In particular, the need for expanded facilities such as a modern dining and assembly hall has become urgent. Addressing these infrastructure deficits is critical for enhancing teaching and learning, improving student welfare, and sustaining the institute’s mission of delivering quality technical education. St. Daniel Comboni Technical Institute remains committed to shaping skilled professionals and contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
